Frequently Asked Questions
What is your book about?
It's a tragicomic memoir of growing up in Regina on the flatlands of Canada in the 1960s. Many funny stories, with a few tragic ones as well -- just like life is. Is that a real photo of you and a nun on the cover?
Yes. (Why does EVERYONE ask this?!) The photo is of Sister Margaret, my Grade One teacher, and I taken in the basement of Little Flower Church right after I received First Communion in 1966. Why did you write this book?
I always wanted to compile all the funny and sad stories of my family. To document what is was like growing up in a small prairie city in the 1960s. It says 'Book One' on the inside cover -- are there more?
Yes. Book Two will be about the 1970s and 80s (my teens & 20s), tentatively titled, "14 Turner: Hell to Heaven." The third book will be the 1990s onward, tentatively titled, "Satan Ripped My Lung: Dying Stupid." Where can I buy your book?

Why is your book dedicated to "the two women who created me"?
My mom was a single mom who raised four children, me being the youngest. My sister, nine years older, did an equal part in raising me.
What places in Regina are featured in your book? Many places from my childhood no longer exist: The Met Theatre and many other downtown movie theatres ... the Medical Dental Building on Rose & 11th where everyone's dentist and doctor were located ... my grade school, St. Thomas, where Access Communications is right now ... plus the east-end cement plant, the Coca-Cola factory on Park Street, Exhibition Auditorium for Stampede Wrestling. |

Growing up in Regina on the flatlands of Canada in the 1960s, Loblaw is raised by his hilarious sister to see the fun in everything, countered by his mother teaching him everything will end badly. Raised by these two disparate women, he is a hybrid of the two — a jumbled, walking mess of stories infused with dark humour.
His life is a swirl of laughter and tears, and so is his memoir. Every family has funny stories and tragedies — Loblaw’s family seems to have quite a lot of both. David G Grade 3 is his first published book. It is the first of three memoirs, the second being 14 Turner: Hell to Heaven and the third, Satan Ripped My Lung: Dying Stupid. After he lost his brother, father, sister, and mother within a few years, Loblaw inherited a mountain of documents and photos that his hoarder mother left for him. After reading the hundreds of personal letters these four people wrote each other over decades, he was chilled to realize his lifelong view of his family was so different from their realities. Listen to Loblaw narrate a few excerpts here. |
